It is dressed and skinned in the basement and hung up in the laundry room. A glimpse of the dead animal costs 20 cents. The nanny has to clean the wild boar’s teeth and put them in a box.” What defines memory and what exactly makes it stick? In Lena Maria Thüring’s video piece “Das Haus”, half a century of family history is reflected on the empty walls of a detached house: the camera slowly moves through the hallways, rooms and staircase, while a narrator’s voice is telling stories of the past. Thüring’s treatment of time and space plays with the expectations of the viewer and explores the relationship between documentary and fiction. By objectifying word and vision on a formal level, Thüring also confronts the viewers with their own past.

Das Kindermädchen hat die Wildschweinzähne zu putzen und in ein Kästchen zu legen.” Was macht Erinnerung aus und woran macht sie sich genau fest? In der Videoarbeit “Das Haus” spiegelt sich ein halbes Jahrhundert Familiengeschichte an den leeren Wänden eines Einfamilienhauses: Die Kamera fährt durch das Gebäude, während eine Stimme aus dem Off von der Vergangenheit erzählt. Thürings Umgang mit Raum und Zeit im Film spielt mit den Erwartungen des Betrachters und befragt die Beziehung zwischen Dokumentation und Fiktion. Durch die Objektivierung von Wort und Bild in der formalen Umsetzung konfrontiert Thüring den Betrachter somit auch mit seiner eigenen Vergangenheit.
